Nicolas Bertholet

Nicolas Bertholet is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM) of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and is affiliated with the Addiction Medicine Department at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). He has held this academic position since August 1, 2022, and has been actively contributing to research and clinical practice in addiction medicine.

His educational background includes a Federal Medical Diploma (2000) and Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from UNIL (2001), followed by extensive postgraduate training at CHUV, Unisanté, and the Boston Medical Center. He earned a Master’s in Epidemiology from the Boston University School of Public Health in 2008 and obtained specialist qualifications in prevention and public health (2010) and psychiatry and psychotherapy (2013).

Nicolas Bertholet's research focuses on the development and evaluation of screening and brief intervention strategies for risky alcohol and substance use, with a strong emphasis on leveraging digital technologies such as internet platforms and smartphone applications. He investigates the evolution of substance consumption patterns and their impact on health outcomes. His work bridges clinical practice and public health research, aiming to improve prevention and early intervention strategies in addiction medicine.

His research integrates digital health tools to deliver scalable interventions, particularly targeting risky alcohol consumption. He has led and participated in multiple studies evaluating the effectiveness of digital behavioral interventions in real-world settings. His interdisciplinary approach combines epidemiology, behavioral science, and clinical medicine to advance evidence-based practices in addictology.

Nicolas Bertholet has held several clinical and academic roles, including Associate Physician in the Alcoholology Department at CHUV (2014–2017), Assistant Physician in the Addiction Medicine Department, and Private Lecturer and Researcher at FBM from 2015 to 2022. Since 2017, he has also pursued advanced training in addiction psychiatry.

He is actively involved in translational research within the Addiction Medicine Service (SMA) at CHUV and collaborates with public health institutions such as IUMSP and Unisanté. His work contributes to national and international efforts in substance use prevention and policy development.
