About
Nico Gray is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics and the Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University and a Habilitation from the Technical University of Darmstadt. His research focuses on granular flows, including geophysical phenomena like snow avalanches, debris flows, and industrial processes such as silo and conveyor belt dynamics. He has held prestigious fellowships from EPSRC and the Royal Society, and leads projects on particle segregation and avalanche dynamics.
Gray's educational background includes a first-class degree from the University of Manchester (1988) and a PhD in sea-ice dynamics from Cambridge (1992). He has been at Manchester since 1998, advancing through roles to full professorship in 2006. His work combines theory, computation, and experiments to study nonlinear systems, particularly shock waves and segregation patterns in granular materials.
Research interests include particle segregation in avalanches, levee formation in granular flows, and rheology modeling. His recent projects involve NERC grants on self-organized mass flows and EPSRC funding on segregation dynamics. He has over 100 publications and collaborates internationally. Gray advises on PhD projects related to granular flows and has received awards such as the Inaugural ‘Outstanding Reviewer’ for Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
