Nico Colombant

Nico Colombant is Senior Lecturer of Digital Media and Cross-Cultural Reporting at the Reynolds School of Journalism, University of Nevada, Reno, where he has taught since 2016. He coordinates the Reynolds Media Lab, a production hub offering podcasting, web-video, and branding services, and manages the Our Town Reno collective, a hyper-local newsroom covering poverty, homelessness, gentrification, and street art in Reno.

Teaching & Research Focus

Colombant’s teaching spans international and cross-cultural journalism, multimedia reporting, news writing, radio features, web video, political journalism, and podcasting. His research and creative practice concentrate on documentary storytelling that explores lawlessness in Africa, the U.S. prison system, drone warfare protests in Nevada, Latino voter engagement in Washoe County, and the lived experiences of Reno’s unhoused residents.

Production Leadership

As director of the Reynolds Media Lab he mentors students while producing content for internal and external clients; as founder of Our Town Reno he fosters community-engaged journalism via documentaries, zines, live events, and social media campaigns.

Global Journalism Career

Prior to academia, Colombant spent fifteen years as a multilingual foreign correspondent, filing from dozens of countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe on conflict, civil war, coups, natural disasters, and human-interest stories for multiple international news organizations.
