Nick Willett

Nick Willett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Oregon’s Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Previously, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Emory University. His research focuses on systems integration approaches for musculoskeletal disease and regenerative engineering, combining mechanical engineering principles with molecular biology techniques.

Willett holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2010) from a joint program between Georgia Tech and Emory University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (2005) from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His postdoctoral training was at Georgia Tech in Mechanical Engineering.

His research interests include cell and biologic therapies for bone/muscle defects, multi-scale mechanical regulation of bone regeneration, and intra-articular therapeutic delivery for post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Key approaches involve biomaterial design, immune modulation, and rehabilitation strategies.

Willett’s lab explores regenerative engineering solutions for complex extremity trauma, including novel imaging techniques and engineered therapies to address unmet clinical needs. Current projects emphasize musculoskeletal integration, lymphatic function optimization, and resolving chronic inflammation.

His work bridges engineering and clinical disciplines, with applications in tissue regeneration, orthopedic trauma, and chronic injury recovery. Collaborations include academic and clinical institutions focusing on translational research.
