Nick Ward is Professor of Clinical Neurology and Neurorehabilitation at University College London's Queen Square Institute of Neurology and an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.
His research focuses on:
- Plasticity of the human brain
- Mechanisms of functional recovery after stroke in humans
- Human functional neuroimaging
- Neurorehabilitation of stroke
- Upper limb function
Professor Ward co-directs the ARM lab at UCL which employs neuro-imaging, brain stimulation, kinematics and robotics to understand neurobiological mechanisms of impairment. His interdisciplinary work spans neuroscience, engineering, architecture, and performing arts.

Professor Ward has secured £12.8M in grant funding as PI or Co-I and has sponsored others to obtain £2.0M in fellowship funding. He established and leads the Upper Limb Neurorehabilitation service at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the only dedicated upper limb rehabilitation facility in the world, which generates £1.2M annually. He is founder and director of the UCLP Centre for Neurorehabilitation (since 2012) and clinical academic lead in UCL's collaboration with SameYou charity to create a Centre for Neurorecovery Research.
