Nick Thorpe is the Head of the School of Humanities and a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Winchester, where he has worked since 1994. He holds a PhD from University College London (UCL), focusing on Neolithic and Bronze Age comparisons between Wessex and Yorkshire. His teaching spans European and British prehistory, archaeological theory, and excavation methods, engaging both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Research interests include Mesolithic to Bronze Age Northwest Europe, disability in prehistory, human lifecycles, and the archaeology of death and warfare. He has supervised research on topics such as prehistoric horses, Yorkshire cave burials, and bronze hoards. Notable publications include The Origins of Agriculture in Europe (1996) and co-edited volumes on prehistoric warfare. He secured a £19,000 European Commission Erasmus grant in 2010 for cross-cultural academic initiatives.
His work bridges academic rigor and public engagement, co-authoring popular books like Centuries of Darkness and Ancient Mysteries. Recent research explores impairment and disability in prehistoric lifecycles, presented at the 2017 University of Southampton conference.
