Honorary Professor Nick Birbilis is currently the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University. At ANU, he serves as Honorary Professor following his tenure as Interim Dean (2021–2022) and Deputy Dean (2018–2021) of the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. His academic focus spans materials engineering, particularly corrosion mechanisms in light alloys, additive manufacturing, and sustainable materials design.
Professor Birbilis pioneered strategic initiatives at ANU, including reimagining engineering education and infrastructure during the pandemic. His research, notably on magnesium alloys and 3D-printed materials, has yielded over 20 patents. He advocates for diversity in STEM and established the 'Birbilis Family Corrosion Award' at Monash University to support underrepresented engineering students.
