Dr. Nicholas de Cruz is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Surrey’s School of Biosciences within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His work bridges elite sport, psychology, and cultural studies, with a focus on psychosocial dynamics in sport systems. He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2020), exploring elite sport in Singapore, and has published extensively on cultural sport psychology, team dynamics, and qualitative methodologies. His research informs policy at the Singapore Sport Institute and he serves as an Expert-Mentor for the Singapore Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Research Programme (2020–present).
Education: BSc from Loughborough University (2014), MSc Psychology (University of Westminster, 2015), MSc Psychology of Sport and Exercise (Loughborough University, 2016), and PhD (University of Birmingham, 2020). His doctoral work was published as a Routledge monograph (2022).
Research interests include team-based thriving mechanisms, shared leadership in sports, cultural influences on sport psychology practices, and disability in elite sport. He is Module Lead for BMS3084: Psychology of Exercise and Health, focusing on applying psychological principles to sport, exercise, and health behaviors. Additionally, he serves as a developmental coach with the Singapore Sailing Federation, leveraging his background as a former World Champion sailor and coach.
His publications span interdisciplinary topics such as parental conflict impacts on children with ASD, data visualization in sport science, and systemic issues in elite sport ecosystems. He actively promotes culturally competent sport psychology practices globally.
