About
Nicholas Robertson is a Professor of Chemistry at Northland College, where he has taught since 2009. His research focuses on developing biorenewable materials and reducing environmental waste through synthetic chemistry. He earned a PhD, MS, and BS in Chemistry from Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Robertson’s work emphasizes small-class engagement and student-led lab projects, which have contributed to peer-reviewed publications.
His research group explores catalytic depolymerization of plastics, sustainable polymer synthesis, and green chemistry applications. Notable projects include the development of recyclable polyesters, biodegradable elastomers, and CO₂-based polymers. Collaborative efforts with students highlight his commitment to hands-on education and environmental stewardship.
Publications span polymer chemistry, catalysis, and materials science, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach. Though Northland College closed in 2025, Robertson’s legacy includes advancing sustainable materials research and mentoring students in impactful scientific work.
