Nicholas J. Shaheen is a Bozymski-Heizer Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology within the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He also serves as the Principal Investigator of UNC's CTSA (North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute - NC TraCS).
Dr. Shaheen's research focuses on clinical epidemiology, clinical and translational research, and clinical trial design, with particular emphasis on Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. His work spans gastrointestinal biology, disease mechanisms, and clinical management strategies for complex GI conditions. His research has significantly contributed to clinical guidelines in gastroenterology.
His publication record shows consistent scholarly output with over 400 publications, demonstrating expertise in Barrett's esophagus management, colonoscopy quality metrics, and the epidemiology of gastrointestinal diseases.
