Nicholas Dunning

Nicholas Dunning is a Professor of Geography at the University of Cincinnati with expertise in environmental archaeology, soils, and cultural ecology. His research focuses on the Maya Lowlands, examining human-environment interactions through landscape evolution, ancient agricultural practices, and water management systems. With over 30 years of fieldwork, he has directed multiple NSF-funded projects in Guatemala and Belize.

Education includes a PhD from University of Minnesota (1990), MA from University of Chicago (1983), and BA from University of Chicago (1980).

Research explores tropical landscape transformation, soil conservation techniques, and cultural adaptations to environmental change. His work integrates geoarchaeology with studies of ancient Maya agroforestry and hydraulic engineering.

Honors include Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship and research grants from National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation, and Foundation for Mesoamerican Studies. Grant leadership spans projects at San Bartolo, Tikal, and Petexbatun regions.

Directs graduate studies and leads international field teams. Current work examines land/water management at Calakmul through NSF grant (2021-2025).
