Dr Nicholas Attfield is an Associate Professor in Music at the University of Birmingham's Department of Music. His research focuses on German music and culture from 1870 to 1945, with specialties in music-political intersections, symphonic traditions, and German opera. He holds a B.Mus. from King’s College London, an M.St. and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His teaching includes modules on Romantic and 20th-century music analysis, Weimar Republic/Third Reich music culture, and symphonic repertoire history. Recent research explores Austrofascism's impact on musical institutions and the cultural legacy of Sub Pop Records. His 2023 book Lamestains critically examines grunge music's subcultural significance.
Awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship (2007–2010), his work appears in journals like Oxford German Studies and Journal of the Royal Musical Association. He has held visiting fellowships at Princeton and Humboldt-Universität, Berlin.
