Nicholas Andersen

Nicholas Andersen, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Director of the Univentricular-Biventricular Care and Research Program at Children’s Health. He specializes in congenital heart disease surgery with expertise in neonatal heart operations, single ventricle defects, and biventricular repair. His roles include Surgical Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and former Co-Director of Duke University’s Single Ventricle Care Program.

• Education: Summa Cum Laude (University of Utah), Harvard Medical School (Honors), Duke University (General Surgery Residency), Boston Children’s Hospital (Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship).

Research interests focus on improving surgical techniques, mechanical support systems, and outcomes for single ventricle patients. He leads programs aiming to enhance survival and quality of life through anatomic repair minimization and translational studies. Dr. Andersen has published over 150 manuscripts and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery since 2015.

His clinical practice spans all ages with congenital heart disease, emphasizing minimally invasive approaches. He collaborates in multi-disciplinary teams to optimize surgical outcomes and leads research into ventricular growth stimulation and biventricular circulation advancements.
