About
Professor Niall MacKay is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of York, where he has held roles including Head of Department (2015-2021) and currently serves as Chair of Correspondents for the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) and International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), and Publications Secretary of the London Mathematical Society (LMS). He holds a PhD from Durham University and has held postdoctoral positions in Kyoto and Cambridge.
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, University of Cambridge
- PhD in Mathematical Physics, University of Durham
His research spans Mathematical Physics (focusing on quantum integrability, Yangians, and AdS/CFT correspondence), Operations Research (asymmetric warfare modeling, historical military analysis via the York Historical Warfare Analysis Group), and Applied Statistics (forecasting, probability scoring, and change point analysis). He has supervised over 15 PhD students and collaborates with institutions like the US Naval Postgraduate School.
Recent work includes Bayesian methods for dynamic forecasting and probabilistic conflict modeling in asymmetric wars. He leads projects funded by the EPSRC, including quantifying counterfactuals in military history and exploring new structures in quantum integrability.
- Supervision:
- Current students: Zane Hassoun, Peter Lloyd, Cixiao Jiang
- Notable past students: Vidas Regelskis, Andreas Rocen
He is affiliated with research groups in Mathematical Physics, Historical Warfare Analysis, and Statistics, and actively contributes to academic governance and outreach initiatives.
