Dr. Neta Spiro is a Reader in Performance Science and Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music (RCM), with an honorary Research Fellowship at Imperial College London. Her multidisciplinary background includes a BMus from Oxford University, an MSc in Cognitive Science from Edinburgh University, and a PhD in Music Psychology from Amsterdam University. She previously held roles as Research Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Nordoff Robbins, and served as Head of Research at Nordoff Robbins and as an honorary member at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Music.
Dr. Spiro’s research focuses on the role of music in health and wellbeing, particularly exploring how collaborative music-making communicates meaning and fosters social connections. Her current projects include the HEartS initiative examining arts’ societal impacts and the Songs from Home project addressing parental mental health through music. She supervises doctoral students researching topics like jazz practice, creative performance, and music therapy.
Her teaching encompasses music psychology, performance science, and health-related topics. She has published extensively on music therapy, arts engagement during the pandemic, and collaborative musical practices. Collaborations include the Musical Care International Network and the Centre for Performance Science at RCM.
