Professor Neil McHugh is Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology at the University of Bath and Consultant Rheumatologist at the RNHRD. He graduated from Otago University Medical School and completed research fellowships at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (1985), Yale University Medical School (1990-1991), and National Heart and Lung Institute (2002-2004).
His research focuses on autoimmune serology, particularly in idiopathic inflammatory myositis, scleroderma, lupus and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. He leads a laboratory group specializing in autoimmune serology and coordinates major European studies on myositis. His work has identified novel autoantibody biomarkers and includes significant research on psoriatic disease.
Professor McHugh has led British Society for Rheumatology guidelines for biologics in psoriatic arthritis and contributed to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. His publications demonstrate expertise in rheumatological immunology, with recent work focusing on autoantibody characterization and population-based cohort studies.
