Neil James

Neil James is a Professor and Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of East Anglia's School of Health Sciences, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Learning, Teaching and Quality. Previously, he held leadership roles including Associate Pro Vice Chancellor (Education and Curriculum) and Director of Practice Education. His academic background includes a PhD from the University of South Wales and a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Glamorgan.

His research focuses on:

• Learning disability nursing and autism spectrum disorders
• Mental health needs in intellectual disabilities
• Forensic issues affecting individuals with learning disabilities
• Family carer experiences and support systems
• Qualitative methodologies including interpretative phenomenological analysis

Recent publications (2019-2023) demonstrate strong emphasis on healthcare service innovation, mental health in vulnerable populations, and evidence synthesis methodologies. His work consistently addresses NHS policy implementation gaps and patient/carer experiences across disability contexts.

He leads the UEAHSCP Learning Disability Research Group and has directed major projects including Health Education England's National Review of Learning Disabilities Workforce. External roles include governor positions at James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
