Neil Holbrook is a Professor of Ocean and Climate Dynamics at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania (UTAS). He serves as Chief Investigator at UTAS and co-leads the CLEX Ocean Extremes Research Program, alongside being the CLEX UTAS node lead. His research focuses on marine heatwaves (MHWs), their drivers, predictability, and impacts on ocean ecosystems.
- Pioneering Research: Led the first global assessment of MHW drivers, establishing a baseline for future studies.
- International Collaboration: Co-leads an international Working Group on MHWs and participates in the CLIVAR Research Focus on Marine Heatwaves.
- Leadership Roles: Former president of the International Commission on Climate (2011-2019), associate editor of the Journal of Climate (2006-2008), and leader of Australia’s National Climate Change Adaptation Research Network for Marine Biodiversity and Resources (2009-2013).
