Neil Gupta

Neil Gupta, M.D., is a Clinical Professor affiliated with Harvard Medical School, serving as Clinical Director for the NCD Synergies Project and the Lancet Commission for Reframing NCDs and Injuries for the Poorest Billion. He previously held roles as Chief Medical Officer for Partners In Health in Rwanda and Principal Investigator for critical studies on Hepatitis C treatment and NCD integration. Dr. Gupta’s work focuses on decentralizing healthcare services and addressing health inequities in low-resource settings. His research spans viral hepatitis elimination, public health policy, and strengthening health systems in sub-Saharan Africa and Ethiopia.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed residency training at Brigham & Women’s and Boston Children’s Hospitals. His academic contributions include pioneering clinical trials for Hepatitis C treatment in Rwanda and Rwanda’s national hepatitis elimination plan. Dr. Gupta’s current base in Addis Ababa underscores his commitment to global health equity.

Research interests emphasize integrating chronic disease care into primary healthcare systems, particularly for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries among marginalized populations. His projects, such as the PEN-Plus strategy, aim to decentralize advanced care to district hospitals in low-income countries. He has led studies evaluating treatment adherence, health worker capacity, and policy frameworks for sustainable healthcare delivery.

Key grants include the Simplifying Hepatitis C Antiviral Therapy study and the Population Health Implementation & Training grant, which measured rural Rwanda’s clinical program impacts. His work bridges clinical practice, public health systems, and global policy to achieve equitable healthcare access.
