Neil Bourne

Professor Neil Bourne holds the Chair of Matter in Extreme Environments at University of Manchester. Educated at University of Cambridge (Natural Sciences), he directs University of Manchester at Harwell and the Thomas Ashton Institute for occupational safety research.

Research: Studies material responses under extreme mechanical/thermal stresses using national facilities (Diamond Light Source, STFC). Work spans shock physics, detonation thresholds, and safety in hazardous environments.

Leadership: Founded journal Safety in Extreme Environments and serves on nuclear safety panels including UK Technical Authority in Shock and Detonation.

Awards: Multiple fellowships (APS, IOP, IOM) and medals for contributions to extreme physics.
