Neil Avent

Neil Avent is a Professor and Head of the School of Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences at the University of Plymouth. His academic qualifications include a BSc in Applied Biological Sciences from Bristol Polytechnic (1984), a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol (1989), and a PGCertHE from UWE, Bristol (2001). He is an external examiner for biomedical sciences programs and PhDs at several universities, including Chester, Aberdeen, and Bristol.

His research focuses on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis using free fetal DNA and fetal cell isolation, red cell turnover mechanisms, blood group genomics, and biomarker discovery. Collaborations include institutions like ICH/UCL, University of Aberdeen, and Grifols SA. Current work leverages next-generation sequencing and proteomics technologies, such as the Thermo Orbitrap Velos Elite mass spectrometer, to advance fetal diagnostics and transfusion medicine.

Neil has supervised numerous PhD students and secured significant grants from EU Framework programs, NIHR, Wellcome Trust, and the Fetal Medicine Foundation. He serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Gynecology and Obstetrics and participates in professional societies like the British Blood Transfusion Society and European Hematology Association. His lab’s work on CD47 glycoprotein and fetal cell transcriptomics underscores his interdisciplinary approach to biomedical research.
