Associate Professor Ned Bertz holds a joint appointment at the Department of History within the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Currently on sabbatical until 2025, his research focuses on transoceanic connections between South Asia and East Africa, particularly the Indian diaspora in Tanzania. He earned his BA/BS from the University of Illinois (1994), and MA (1998) and PhD (2008) from the University of Iowa.
His academic expertise spans modern South Asian and African history, with specializations in imperialism, decolonization processes, and transnational exchanges. He teaches courses on world history, global sports history, and historiography. Notable accolades include the University of Hawaiʻi Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching (2010).
Recent research examines decolonization as a prolonged process reshaping territoriality and mobility in the Indian Ocean region. He has served as Resident Director for UHM’s India Study Abroad Program and as a Visiting Faculty Member at Ambedkar University, Delhi.
