About
Dr Nathan Richards is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Nottingham's Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on the Digital Black Atlantic, interrogating the role of digital humanities tools in reshaping memory and creative engagement with the Black past.
Richards examines intersections between traditional memory forms (e.g., oral traditions, art, music) and contemporary technologies like databases, social media, and immersive tools. His work critically addresses power dynamics, inequalities, and inclusion in archival practices, engaging with debates on data ethics, access, digital ontologies, algorithmic bias, and participatory paradigms within the Digital Black Atlantic. Additionally, he incorporates Afro-futurist and science fiction frameworks to advance reparative approaches to Black historical narratives.
