Rein's research spans the history of Christianity, the Protestant Reformation in Germany, and theoretical frameworks for understanding religion. His work also examines how trauma and dissent shape religious identity and practice.
His recent publications analyze teaching in small departments, the Reformation's use of print and propaganda, trauma theory in religious contexts, and the evolving definitions of religion. These works reflect an interdisciplinary approach blending history, sociology, and theology.
Nathan has held significant academic roles, including Co-chair of the American Academy of Religion's History of Christianity section (2006–2012) and Associate Editor of the Bulletin for the Study of Religion. He contributed to a Teagle Foundation-funded colloquium on the future of liberal arts education.
