Nathan Rees

Nathan Rees, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of West Georgia. He is affiliated with the School of Visual and Performing Arts within the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. His research focuses on intersections of race, religion, and colonialism in American art, with a focus on Indigenous America, Mormon visual culture, and monuments. He joined UWG in 2016 and holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Maryland (2010).

Rees teaches a wide range of courses, including History of Western Art, Non-Western Art, American Art, and capstone seminars. Recent courses include Art of the African Diaspora, Modernist Criticism, and Ecocritical Approaches to Art. His publications explore topics like settler monuments, Mormon visual culture, and metaphysical spirituality in modernist art.

Notable works include his book Mormon Visual Culture and the American West (2021) and articles analyzing monuments such as This is the Place and the Voortrekker Monument. His research bridges art history with critical race theory and colonial studies.
