Nancy J. Smyth is a Professor and former Dean (2004–2021) at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. She holds roles as Associate Dean for Faculty Development and is an affiliated research scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions. Her expertise spans trauma-informed practice, substance abuse treatment, and integrating digital technologies into social work education and practice. She earned her PhD, MSW, and BA in Psychology from SUNY Albany.
Dr. Smyth’s leadership transformed UB’s MSW program into a top 10% nationally, emphasizing trauma and human rights frameworks. She co-founded the Buffalo Center for Social Research and pioneered initiatives like the inSocialWork podcast, reaching 200+ countries.
