Nancy Bauer is a Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University, affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD from Harvard University (1997) and has served as a dean in the School of Arts and Sciences from 2012 to 2022, including roles as Dean of Academic Affairs and inaugural dean of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts (SMFA). She returned to the Philosophy department in 2022 and is currently writing a book on higher education and philosophical practice.

Bauer’s research focuses on feminism, existentialism, phenomenology, and the intersection of philosophy with film and cultural critique. She explores how philosophy can address structural inequities and amplify marginalized voices. Her notable works include How to Do Things With Pornography (2015) and Simone de Beauvoir, Philosophy, and Feminism (2001), alongside editorial contributions to volumes on Simone de Beauvoir and Stanley Cavell.
Her recent publications reflect a sustained engagement with ethical and epistemological questions in contemporary culture. Bauer is also active in academic communities, leading a global online knitting group for philosophers.
