Professor Andreas Nanakis serves as a Professor of History and Secretariat of the Church of Greece at the Department of Social Theology & Christian Culture within the School of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Holding the ecclesiastical title of Metropolitan of Arkalochorion, Kastelli & Viannos, he maintains a dual role as both an academic and religious leader.
His research and teaching focus on the historical relationship between church and state, with particular emphasis on Orthodox Christianity in Southeastern Europe. His scholarly interests encompass the historical development of the Greek Orthodox Church, the ecclesiastical history of Mount Athos, and the complex interplay between religious institutions and national identity formation in the Balkans. His work examines the historical trajectory of Asia Minor and Pontian Hellenism within the broader context of Orthodox ecclesiastical history.
Professor Nanakis teaches core courses including Church-State Relations Issues (Historical View), Asia Minor and Pontian Hellenism, Ecumenical Patriarchate and Church of Crete, Sources of Ecclesiastical History, and The Problem of Nationalism in the Churches of Southeastern Europe. His teaching reflects the department's mission to provide comprehensive education in Orthodox Theology and Christian Culture, with particular attention to historical and political dimensions of ecclesiastical development.
As a member of the faculty at one of Greece's premier theological institutions, Professor Nanakis contributes to several postgraduate programs including 'Orthodox Theology and Christian Culture,' 'Studies in the history, spirituality, art and musical tradition of Mount Athos,' 'Greece: Ecclesiastical History & Culture,' and 'Religious & Pilgrimage Tourism,' reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his scholarly work.
