About
Dr. Myron Smith is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, with affiliations to the Institute of Environmental Science. His research integrates genetics, molecular biology, and microbiology to address fundamental and applied challenges in fungal biology, antimicrobial discovery, and environmental monitoring.
- Education: B.Sc. in Botany (University of Alberta, 1984), M.Sc. (University of Toronto at Mississauga, 1987), Ph.D. (University of Toronto at Mississauga, 1992)
His laboratory focuses on four themes: (1) fungal nonself recognition systems, (2) ethnobotanical and microbial antifungal/bacterial compounds, (3) antimicrobial mode-of-action studies using gene deletion arrays, and (4) high-resolution genetic markers for population genetics. His work spans health, agrifood, environmental science, and biofuels, with recent publications on compost teas, oxidative stress pathways, and antimicrobial resistance. He has held leadership roles as Department Chair (2012–2016) and Institute Director (2002–2007).
