Mylène Riva is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at McGill University, holding the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Housing, Community, and Health. Her research focuses on housing as a social determinant of health, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous communities, energy poverty, and urban/rural health inequities. She has conducted extensive work in Nunavik, Nunavut, and other Arctic regions, examining housing interventions, environmental health, and policy impacts.
Dr. Riva earned a BSc in Geography and PhD in Public Health from Université de Montréal, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Durham University (UK) and Université Laval. She previously served as an Assistant Professor at Université Laval (2012–2016) and has led projects such as the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 Nunavik Health Survey and the Pathways Study on food insecurity. Her work emphasizes collaboration with Indigenous communities and policymakers to translate research into actionable health policies.
Her scientific awards include the Canada Research Chair and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. Current projects address energy poverty in Canada, climate change adaptation in Tuktoyaktuk, and housing policy reforms in Arctic regions. She has published widely on topics such as household crowding, Inuit health, and environmental determinants of well-being.
