Myeongsub Kim

Myeongsub (Mike) Kim is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on microfluidic sensors, optical diagnostic techniques, energy systems (oil and gas), and thermal-fluid sciences. He leads the Microfluidics and Energy Laboratory (MEL), advancing technologies for carbon capture, enhanced oil recovery, and renewable energy systems.

Dr. Kim holds a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology. His work bridges microscale fluid dynamics with large-scale energy challenges, utilizing innovative experimental methods like laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Key areas include CO2 sequestration via nanoparticle catalysis, nucleate boiling heat transfer optimization, and microfluidic analysis of subsurface fluid dynamics.

His research portfolio spans 20+ years, with recent emphasis on sustainable energy solutions such as green hydrogen production via alkaline electrolysis and seawater-based carbon capture systems. Over 100 peer-reviewed publications demonstrate his contributions to microfluidic technologies for environmental and energy applications.

Notable projects include developing novel fin surfaces for enhanced boiling heat transfer, optimizing nanoparticle coatings for CO2 absorption, and modeling particle dynamics in fractured reservoirs. His interdisciplinary approach integrates material science, computational modeling, and experimental validation to address global energy and environmental challenges.
