Dr. Mungai Mutonya is a Teaching Professor in African and African American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in sociolinguistics and multilingual communities in Africa. As Kenya Summer Program Coordinator, he leads study abroad experiences.
His research examines language attitudes, nonstandard language forms in marginalized communities, and the sociolinguistic impact of urban slang and pidgins across African contexts. Dr. Mutonya has published on Swahili variations, African Englishes, and street language in Nairobi.
