About
Mukund Sibi is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at North Dakota State University (NDSU), leading the active Sibi Research Group focused on multidisciplinary solutions for 21st-century chemical challenges. His work bridges fundamental organic synthesis with practical applications in sustainability and medicine.
Education
- PhD: City University of New York
- Postdoc: Dartmouth College
- Postdoc: University of Waterloo
Research Interests
Research centers on four interconnected pillars: (1) innovative synthetic methodology development, (2) asymmetric synthesis via chiral Lewis acid catalysis, (3) total synthesis of bioactive terpenes/alkaloids, and (4) sustainable materials engineering. The group pioneers enantioselective radical reactions—achieving high stereocontrol in conjugate additions of carbon radicals, amines, and carbanions—and applies these methods to natural product synthesis. Additional projects include agricultural feedstock valorization, conducting polymer synthesis, and corrosion sensor development, all emphasizing green chemistry principles.
Teaching
- CHEM 341/341L: Organic Chemistry I
- CHEM 353: Majors Organic Chemistry Lab I
- CHEM 354: Majors Organic Chemistry Lab II
- CHEM 436/636: Biopolymers and Biocomposites
- CHEM 741: Physical Organic Chemistry
- CHEM 747: Heterocycles
Research Group
The Sibi Group maintains a globally diverse team of student collaborators working across synthetic methodology, natural products, and materials science, with strong emphasis on enantioselective catalysis and sustainable applications.
