Muhammad ZAFARULLAH

Prof. Muhammad ZAFARULLAH is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on signaling mechanisms of pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines, regulation of TIMP-3 and TIMP-4 genes, and roles in bone tissue remodeling. He studies TGF-β and Oncostatin M pathways, with emphasis on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and aggrecanases (ADAMTS) in joint diseases and atherosclerosis.

Affiliated with the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). He has supervised five graduate students since 2001, focusing on inflammatory mechanisms in cartilage degradation and gene regulation. His work combines clinical and fundamental research approaches.

Key areas of expertise include arthritis/osteoarthritis, joint pathology, and immune mediators. He has contributed to understanding the stability of atherosclerotic plaques through gene regulation studies.
