About
Morris Cohen is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, having joined the faculty in Fall 2013 after serving as a research scientist at Stanford University and an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (2003)
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (2010)
Dr. Cohen's research centers on Earth's natural electrical phenomena, specializing in lightning, the electrically charged upper atmosphere, and space environment radiation. He employs global low-frequency radio wave measurements to analyze these systems and develops novel instrumentation using nonconventional electrically-short antennas. His work bridges atmospheric physics, space science, and radio engineering with applications in geolocation, environmental monitoring, and space weather prediction.
His major scientific awards include:
- NSF CAREER Award (2017)
- ONR Young Investigator Award (2015)
- Santimay Basu Prize by URSI (2014)
- CTL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (2018)
- Leadership Award from UN/NASA International Heliophysical Year (2010)
- AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (2012-2013)
Dr. Cohen serves as Associate Editor for Radio Science and chairs the Executive Committee of the Atmospheric and Space Electricity Focus Group at the American Geophysical Union. He leads the Low Frequency Radio Group at Georgia Tech, which develops advanced signal processing techniques for lightning characterization and space environment monitoring. In teaching, he implements flipped classroom models to enhance student engagement in electrical engineering courses.
