Morgan Tingley

Morgan Tingley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on how species respond to large-scale environmental changes, particularly climate change and wildfire impacts on bird communities. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University, an M.Sc. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. Tingley has held prior positions at the University of Connecticut and Princeton University as a David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow.

His work emphasizes understanding ecological responses to anthropogenic pressures, including studies on avian migration, phenological shifts, and the effects of wildfire smoke on bird health. He is an elected Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and has received awards such as the U.S. Forest Service’s ‘Wings across the Americas’ Conservation Award.

Research projects include investigations into urban tolerance of animal species, pyrodiversity science, and long-term ecological monitoring. Tingley collaborates on initiatives like the Santa Monica Mountains bird migration study led by PhD student Kelsey Reckling and oversees postdoctoral research on urban bat species stressors.
