Dr. Monique Waite is a Senior Lecturer in Speech Pathology at the University of Queensland’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She previously held a Research Fellowship at the HEARing Cooperative Research Centre. Her current research focuses on telehealth applications to improve access to hearing healthcare for individuals and families, particularly exploring stigma management and culturally diverse populations. Dr. Waite is a pioneer in pediatric telepractice, having completed the first PhD in this field (2010) and developed Internet-based telehealth systems for assessing and treating childhood communication disorders. She has led interdisciplinary projects like the Simulated Telemedicine Environment Project for Students (STEPS), funded by the Australian Department of Health, which innovated simulated learning across multiple health disciplines.
Education: Bachelor (Honours) of Speech Pathology and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Queensland.
Research interests include telehealth protocols for children with communication disabilities, family-centered care models, and interprofessional education. She has secured grants such as the NHMRC Targeted Research Grant (2022–2026) and has supervised numerous PhD candidates focusing on telepractice outcomes and aphasia impacts in adolescents.
Her work spans over 50 peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations, and research reports, with recent emphases on stigma experiences in hearing loss, engagement in telepractice, and accessibility for culturally diverse populations. She is affiliated with the University of Queensland Centre for Hearing Research and the Parenting and Family Support Centre.
