Monika Herzig

Monika Herzig is an award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and Professor of Artistic Research at JAM Music Lab University, where she serves as Vice Rector for Diversity & International Affairs. Her academic career spans institutions like Indiana University, Taylor University, and IUPUI, with a focus on music education and jazz studies.

• 1983–1988: Lehramt (Teacher Training) in Mathematics, Music, and German at Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten
• 1988–1991: MA in Music Education with teacher certification from the University of Alabama
• 1991–1997: DME in Music Education with minors in Jazz Studies from Indiana University

Her research explores intersections between jazz pedagogy, gender studies, entrepreneurship models, and artistic research. Recent publications analyze jazz jam sessions as frameworks for innovation, gender equity in music, and arts-based entrepreneurship education.

Monika's scholarly work has been recognized with the Outstanding Book Award from the Association of American University Presses and a Jazz Journalist Association Jazz Hero honor. She has secured grants from the NEA, Indiana Arts Commission, and South Arts for international collaborations and educational initiatives.
