Monika Elbert is a Professor of English and University Distinguished Scholar at Montclair State University, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds degrees from Rutgers University: BA (Douglass College), MA, and PhD.
Her research focuses on 19th-century women writers, American Romanticism, children’s literature, and Gothic studies. She is Editor of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review and has authored/co-edited numerous books, including American Women's Regionalist Fiction: Mapping the Gothic (2021) and Hawthorne in Context (2018). Recent work explores transnational Gothic exchanges and hotel culture in 19th-century travel narratives.
