Monika Berg is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Sociology at Örebro University, Sweden. She holds a doctoral degree in Political Science and serves as research leader for the Environmental Sociology Section. Her primary affiliation is with the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, within the Department of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.
Research Interests: Monika's work focuses on environmental policy, science-policy interfaces, and sustainable societal transitions. She examines how scientific knowledge influences policy-making, particularly regarding environmental governance and climate change. Additional research areas include the welfare state's organizational impact on institutional trust, with studies on trust-building in segregated urban areas and the effects of private vs. public welfare service provision. Her theoretical frameworks include deliberative democracy, policy theory, and science and technology studies.
Current Projects: Active research includes the WATCH project addressing water challenges in sustainable urban planning, the EcoLogic project analyzing ecosystem governance logics, and the Green Public Ethics initiative exploring value conflicts in environmental administration. She also leads the conceptual development of environmental sociology and studies the legitimacy of welfare state structures.
Professional Roles: Monika chairs the Environment & Society research network under the European Sociological Association, sits on the SACO-S and SULF university boards, and oversees the bachelor's sociology course. Her work bridges academic research with policy-making, emphasizing transformative governance and institutional trust mechanisms.
Labs/Teams: She is part of the Center for Social Science Environmental and Sustainability Research (CESSS) and the Environmental Sociology Section, collaborating with international scholars on projects like IPBES and IPCC dynamics.
