Monica Styles

Dr. Monica Styles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at Howard University, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a PhD in Latin American literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on recovering Black perspectives in early modern Caribbean literature and theorizing 'Afro-Intertextuality' to center Afro-descendant cultural production.

Her work examines racial formations in colonial Latin America, particularly how Blackness was articulated in Spanish colonial texts through oral discourse and embodied resistance. Key publications include analyses of Alonso de Sandoval's De Instauranda Aethiopum Salute and Thomas Gage's travel writings, exploring African agency and racial discourse.

Teaching focuses on Spanish language and Latin American literature from colonial to contemporary periods, including courses like SPAN 083: Formation of Latin America and SPAN 060: Analysis of Afro-Hispanic Literature.
