Monica Kim

Monica Kim is Associate Professor of History and William Appleman Williams & David G. and Marion S. Meissner Chair in U.S. International and Diplomatic History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research examines U.S. foreign policy, decolonization, and the Korean War through lenses of sovereignty, race, and militarism.

Research Focus: Kim's work analyzes: 1) Interrogation practices and sovereignty struggles during the Korean War; 2) Relationships between liberalism and racial formations; 3) Global militarism and human rights; 4) Transnational political movements. Her award-winning book The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War uncovered hidden histories of POW interrogations.

Future Research: Current project The World that Hunger Made examines development policy as foreign policy tool in Korea and Afro-Asia.
