Dr. Monica Anne Batac is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Social Work. Her research program centers on community capacity-building within Filipino communities in Canada, examining immigration, labour migration, and community practice through critical de/colonizing frameworks. She is currently completing her PhD in Social Work at McGill University, funded by a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
Batac employs transnational feminist, anti-racist, and anti-colonial approaches in both research and teaching. She co-founded the Filipino Canadian Social and Community Workers Network and integrates experiential pedagogy that connects classroom learning with community action. Her work emphasizes critical-creative methodologies including autoethnography, community-based research, and action research.
Her publications explore diasporic identity, scholar-activism, and knowledge mobilization, often using innovative formats like readers theatre to communicate research findings. Batac's current dissertation research examines the lived experiences of diasporic Filipino/a/x workers in Canadian settlement and social services.
