Dr. Mona Chitnis is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Energy Economics and Director of the Surrey Energy Economics Centre (SEEC) at the University of Surrey's School of Economics. She holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc in Economics from the University of Tehran. Previously, she served as a Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen (2013-2014) and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) at the University of Surrey (2006-2013). Prior to academia, she worked as an Expert in Economics and State Planning in Tehran (2000-2013) and lectured at Alzahra University.
Her research focuses on energy economics, climate change, environmental economics, and applied econometrics. Key areas include energy demand modelling, renewable energy transitions, energy efficiency rebound effects, and policy analysis. She leads SEEC, a hub for interdisciplinary energy economics research, and contributes to the Athena Swan implementation team at the University of Surrey.
Mona has been recognized with the Faculty EC Teacher of the Year Award (2017). Her recent work addresses distributed heating systems, fuel poverty, and decarbonisation strategies. She also serves on the UKRI Interdisciplinary Assessment College and collaborates with institutions globally to advance sustainable development goals.
