About
Mohamed Y. El-Naggar is Dean's Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and Professor of Physics, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry at USC Dornsife College. He investigates biological electron transfer at biotic-abiotic interfaces with applications in renewable energy, biofuels, and bioelectronics.
Research pioneers the study of 'electric bacteria' that perform extracellular electron transfer to insoluble minerals. Recent breakthroughs include characterizing nanowire conduction mechanisms, mapping membrane potential dynamics during electron transfer, and engineering living electronic components. Work combines single-molecule biophysics, electrochemistry, and synthetic biology approaches.
- Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2013)
