Mishuana Goeman is the Tonawanda Band of Seneca Professor of Indigenous Studies and Chair of the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo). She previously held roles at UCLA, including positions in Gender Studies, American Indian Studies, and as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Center for Diversity Innovation. Her work bridges academia and community engagement, focusing on Indigenous feminisms, digital humanities, and decolonial methodologies.
Education: PhD in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University (2003); MA (2000) and BA in English and Native American Studies from Dartmouth College (1994). Additional studies include a study abroad at University College London (1992-1993) and tribal education through T.R.I.B.E.S. Program at Colorado State University (1990).
Research Interests: Indigenous geographies, digital sovereignty, repatriation, and Indigenous artistic practices. Notable projects include Mapping Indigenous LA (2015), Carrying Our Ancestors Home (2019), and the Mukurtu California Native Hub (2021). She is Principal Investigator for the UC President’s multi-campus grant Centering Tribal Stories in Difficult Times.
Awards: Co-authored Keywords in Gender and Sexuality Studies (2021), which won the Choice Award. Elected President of the American Studies Association (2023).
Grants and Leadership: Co-PI on Haudenosaunee Archival Research and Knowledge (Mellon-funded, 2023). Advocacy includes roles as Special Advisor for Indigenous Relations at UCLA (2018-2022) and community-based digital sovereignty initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads digital humanities projects prioritizing tribal self-determination in cultural heritage management. Collaborates with tribal nations on repatriation and language reclamation through platforms like Mukurtu.
