About
Miriam Mints is a Professor at Örebro University and Associate Professor/Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Women's and Children's Health, where she leads the 'Tumors of the female genital organs' research group. Her work bridges clinical practice at Karolinska University Hospital Solna with translational research in gynecological oncology, focusing on endometrial cancer and related conditions.
Her research interests center on uterine cancer etiology, predisposition, and prevention, with particular expertise in endometrial pathology related to heavy menstrual bleeding and hereditary gynecological cancers. She established the RENDOCAS (Registry of Endometrial Cancer in Sweden) project, which has built a comprehensive endometrial cancer biobank at Karolinska University Hospital Solna. Her work integrates molecular genetics, proteomics, and biomarker development with clinical research to identify disease-causing genes and develop early diagnostic markers.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on genetic aspects of endometrial cancer, particularly through large-scale collaborative studies like the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database. Her research combines epidemiological approaches with molecular biology to identify cancer risk factors, prognostic biomarkers, and personalized prevention strategies. Notable themes include the relationship between environmental factors (like cadmium exposure) and cancer outcomes, HPV-related cervical dysplasia management, and the genetic basis of endometrial cancer.
As an educator, Mints supervises doctoral students (including three clinicians in her current research group), teaches undergraduate medical students, and leads continuing education courses through the Swedish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SFOG). She has initiated several educational projects including training for general practitioners in gynecology and an elective course on oncological diagnostics. Her research is supported by multiple funding sources including the National Health and Medical Research Council, Arvsfonden Sverige, and ALF projects.
Mints' research group operates across clinical and translational domains, with day surgery operations serving as a platform for patient-centered research. Her team maintains extensive national and international collaborations including with CCK (Cancer Center Karolinska) and ENITEC (European Network for Individualized Treatment in Endometrial Cancer). In 2011, her group was evaluated by ERA (Evaluation & Research Associates) and rated as 'Very good'.
