Mirca Madianou is Professor in Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research examines the societal impacts of digital technologies, infrastructures, and artificial intelligence, particularly in Global South contexts involving migration and humanitarian crises.
She leads the British Academy-funded project on digital identity systems in Thai refugee camps. Madianou developed the concept of 'technocolonialism' to critique how well-intentioned technological solutions perpetuate power imbalances. Her influential work on polymedia analyzes how migrants maintain relationships through multiple digital platforms.
