About
Minna Kempe is a Project Researcher and doctoral student at the University of Oulu's Civil Engineering research unit within the Faculty of Technology. A certified Building health expert (RTA) with a Master of Science in biochemistry and laboratory sciences, she contributes to the Healthy buildings research group and Good Indoor Air and Building Health team.
Her research centers on indoor environmental quality, with specific expertise in energy-efficient building retrofits, indoor microbiological communities, and toxicity assessment through cell culture models. She investigates critical connections between building modifications, occupant health, and microbial ecosystems, utilizing longitudinal data from the INSULAtE project (2010-2015) to analyze dust toxicity mechanisms and health outcomes.
Current projects driving her work include:
- INSULAtE follow-up: Examining decade-long impacts of energy improvements on indoor environments
- ALTTI 2022: National survey assessing Finnish living conditions' health and safety dimensions
- BALANCE: Developing climate-resilient building solutions through cost-benefit analysis of sustainability measures
Her interdisciplinary approach bridges civil engineering with toxicology and environmental health, addressing urgent climate adaptation challenges in the built environment while maintaining human health as the central focus.
