Mileta Roe is a Professor of Comparative Literature and Spanish at Bard College at Simon's Rock. She specializes in Comparative Literary Journalism, Translation and Adaptation Studies, Medicine and Narrative, and 20th & 21st-century Latin American Narrative. Her teaching spans Creative Nonfiction, Latin American literature, and Francophone/Spanish-language film. She holds a PhD and MA from Brandeis University, a BM from Oberlin Conservatory (Vocal Performance), and a BA with Honors in Comparative Literature from Oberlin College.
Her research bridges medicine and nonfiction writing, with recent work analyzing Sandra Steingraber’s ecological narratives. She has co-translated The Elements of Mindfulness and her translations of plays like La rata-cambalachera have been performed internationally. Roe’s writings appear in journals such as Canadian Review of Comparative Literature and Literary Journalism Studies, and she previously worked as a staff editor at The Atlantic.
Her awards include Oberlin’s Dissertation Prize, and she has presented at conferences like the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies and the American Comparative Literature Association. Roe also maintains interests in vocal/instrumental music and contemporary composers.
